Day Trip out of town
arts and culture

Some days it's great to hop in a car and see the world beyond the city's gates. This Vancouver day trip takes you up the beautiful Howe Sound and allows you to explore wildlife and nature, all within a two-hour drive of Vancouver, British Columbia.

While you can enjoy this Vancouver day trip drive in most weather, the scenery is so spectacular that it would be a shame to miss some of it due to low-hanging clouds. Bring walking shoes and layers of clothing, as you may be gaining some altitude in the day.

Drive north over the Lion's Gate Bridge. Take the Highway 1/West Vancouver turnoff. Follow the signs to the Sea to Sky Highway/Whistler. You'll turn right on Taylor Way and drive up the hill. Turn left onto the Upper Levels Highway, also known as the Sea to Sky. Follow the signs for Whistler.

10:30 a.m.

You'll pass beautiful Horseshoe Bay.

11:00 a.m.

Continue to Squamish.

There are seven provincial parks in the area. Turn off at the one that interests you the most. Keep an eye out for Shannon Falls Provincial Park, which will be on the right-hand side. It offers one of the province's highest waterfalls.

Did you know? The falls are the third highest in Canada . They're 335 meters high. In comparison, Niagara Falls is a mere 56 meters high.

If you're in the area between November and February, you'll see eagles from all over North America gather to feed on spawning salmon. In January, the area is host to the Brackendale Winter Eagle Festival and Count sponsored by the Brackendale Art Gallery (604) 898-3333.
