Being the provincial capital, Victoria, British Columbia has always focused on archiving our past. This gallery tour will take you through the province's largest gallery collection and some smaller galleries, for a complete perspective on BC art, past and present.

This Victoria galleries itinerary works rain or shine. You'll be spending a lot of time indoors, but as it does involve some walking, if the weather looks menacing, pick up an umbrella along Government Street.

10:00 a.m.
Emily Carr House 207 Government Street (250) 383-5843 Arrive in the Inner Harbour. Walk four blocks south of the Parliament Buildings to 207 Government Street. This is the birthplace of Emily Carr. No tour of BC Art would be complete without understanding the role she plays in the history of local art.

11:00 a.m.
Leave the Emily Carr House. Catch a cab to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.

10:30 a.m.
Art Gallery of Greater Victoria 1040 Moss Street (250) 384-4101 With more than 10,000 works, the art gallery has the largest collection of art in BC. (rates: $8.00 adults. Discounts for seniors and students)

1:30 p.m.
Leave the Art Gallery. Catch a cab down Fort Street to 525 Fort Street.

2:00 p.m.
Temple Restaurant 525 Fort Street 250-383-2313. This new restaurant, set in a heritage building, offers delicious west coast cuisine. You can also text message your reservation request to 250- 882-5251.

2:30 p.m.

West End Gallery
1203 Broad Street

Walk off some of your lunch as you stroll through some smaller galleries.

Walk up Government Street, away from the Inner Harbour, one block to View Street. Turn right.

Walk one block to Broad Street. Turn Left. Walk to 1203 Broad Street.

Continue down Broad Street, stopping at these two galleries.

Alcheringa Gallery 665 Fort Street (250) 383-8224 When you reach Fort Street, walk to 665 Fort Street. Stop at Alcheringa Gallery, for a collection of works of Native art.

6:00 p.m.

From Fort Street, turn left onto Broad Street. Walk to 1011 Broad Street.

This restaurant offers an eclectic blend of foods. They don't take reservations. Give in your name and you await your turn on the sidewalk. The atmosphere breeds conversation between patrons, and you never know... the Manager may offer you a beverage to ease your wait. Well worth it.

D'arcy McGees Irish Pub 1127 Wharf Street (250) 380-1322 Continue down Broad Street to Broughton. Turn right. Walk three blocks to Wharf Street. If you're in the mood for an after-dinner drink, stop at D'arcy McGees Irish Pub.
