History of Mayfair "Jewellers" Clock
Relocating to the courtyard outside the Toys R Us entrance, the very colourful clock was originally owned by the jewellery firm of Challoner & Mitchell, Government Street. The clock was in answer to their competitor, F.W. Francis, which had a 2-sided clock.
In June of 1910, Challoner & Mitchell, the original owners of the clock, sold the business and the firm was renamed Shortt Hill & Duncan Limited. In 1915, the clock was relocated to Broad and View.
By 1930, the firm name had been changed to Mitchell and Duncan and the clock moved to 1127 Government, the current location of Eaton’s The tobacconist across the street is still there today, possibly same owner. Walter Duncan used to visit them for his daily "stogie".
Mitchell & Duncan closed their doors in 1956 due to Mr. Duncan’s illness. Mrs. Duncan sold the clock to Bapco Paint in 1957 when Mr. Duncan passed away. Walter Duncan’s daughter-in-law still resides in Victoria. The clock remained outside until Laing Properties finally purchased it in 1984 to add local character to the Food Fair. Now it will be once again outside where shoppers can make plans to - meet at the clock.
