The Maritime Museum of BC has been in existence since 1955. The museum moved to its present location (The old courthouse, built 1889) in 1965.
The museum has 3 floors. The first 2 hold exhibits that trace the maritime heritage of BC. There are examples of old motors, a 38 foot boat that was fashioned from a native dug out cedar canoe and sailed from Victoria to England from 1901 to 1904, the strong connection to fishing and whaling, the rich history of the Royal and Royal Canadian Navies, our extensive coastal and inland ferry system, lots of models of the many types and styles of vessels that have and still do ply the waters of the Pacific coast, Information on The graveyard of the Pacific, (many vessels ended their last voyage on the rocks of the rugged coast)
The third floor holds a fully restored period court room that pays homage to the buildings original use and an extensive library for research into the nautical history of just not BC but world wide. Plan on spending a good half day exploring the museum.
